History

Rangers were formed in 1873 by a youth group from the West of Scotland, and played at three different grounds before moving to their current home, Ibrox Stadium, just before the turn of the century. By then they had already won their first major honours, including the first ever Scottish league championship in 1891, sharing 1st place with Dumbarton. Rangers' first manager was William Struth, who was appointed in 1920. He stayed at the club for 34 years, in that time winning 18 league championships, 10 Scottish Cup finals and 2 League Cup finals. This was the first of many spells of dominance by Rangers on Scottish football.

Two decades on, and Rangers were again leading the way, under the guidance of Jock Wallace, one of Rangers greatest managers. Not only did he win the domestic treble of league and both cups twice in three years, but also led Rangers to their only European trophy to date, the Cup Winner's Cup, won in 1972. Some of the most gifted players to ever pull on a Rangers jersey played in that final against Moscow Dinamo in Barcelona. Legends such as Peter McCloy, Derek Johnstone and John Greig starred as Rangers won 3-2.

Closer to the present however, came Rangers ultimate triumph: equalling their arch-rivals Celtic's long -standing record of 9 league titles in a row. On the 7th of May 1997, Rangers' legendary Danish winger Brian Laudrup headed the only goal of the game as Rangers beat Dundee Utd 1-0 to secure the title. That game also saw the end of an era, as many long serving players left to continue their careers elsewhere. At the end of the following season, after not winning a single trophy for the first time in over a decade, Walter Smith left to manage Everton in England, which heralded the arrival of Dick Advocaat as Rangers manager. He made a major impact in his first season, signing many top-class internationals and winning the domestic treble. This season was finished without any honours for the Gers, but few would suggest that this lapse will be permanent.
